Mac Saga
Here's a fun story for those of you who claim to be jealous of my travels. It's not always fun.
In January, I decided to visit Steve, Tiffany, and Vince. When leaving Chicago on Jan. 24 to head to Iowa, I went to give Steve a hug and my roller bag tipped over. With my carry-on bag on top of it. With my Macbook inside of it.
Now, for years, I would religiously back up my hard drive. Meticulously labeled floppy disks, yadda yadda. Well, nothing ever happened. So now I buy a fancy bullet proof Mac and never got around to backing up the data. Never mind that I have five years of photos on it and a years worth of schoolwork and textbooks.
When I tried to boot up in Iowa, I got a giant question mark on the screen. I took that as a bad omen. Rather than drive to Des Moines right away to get it fixed I waited til I was on the way to the airport in Omaha and swung by the local Best Buy. After all, I have Black Tie coverage and figured I would get First Class service. The guy would barely look at it and apparently he was super busy. So I decided my precious Mac would not be safe in his hands. I hauled my paperweight to Albuquerque with me. While there, we drove by a Best Buy and I just didn't get a competent vibe from the place so didn't bother to stop.
When I arrived in Chicago, Steve suggested we go to his neighborhood BB and since I've shopped there before, figured it was a good plan. We talked to the very nice Geek at the counter and he was very helpful. He tried to get the hard drive repaired right there, but no luck. He said he would work on it til the next day and see what he could do. Oh and BTW, the hard drive is covered by my Black Tie service, but not the data recovery. That will be $154, please.
Well, turns out I physically damaged the drive when it crashed to the cement so it needed to go to the Service Center where they had the tools to retrieve data from abused hard drives. Since I would only be in Chicago until Tuesday (I thought) they said they would ship it from their Service Centerto Springfield, Oregon, when it was fixed. This was on Monday, Jan. 31.
So he sent it to the Service Center and was nice enough to refund $95 to me. Wait. Oh. I need to bring in the external hard drive to get the rest? But I never got the external hard drive. You were going to put my data on it for me. Well, apparently I need to talk to Springfield (Store 600 if you were wondering) about that refund.
I prepared to fly out on Tuesday, only to discover all flights were cancelled due to the imminent blizzard. Also, all flights Wednesday. I finally flew home Thursday night. I had to work Friday so all was good. Until I called my doctor Friday asking to be seen for the shakes and fevers I had all week while in Chicago (thought it was the flu or Mac withdrawals). She told me to go to the ER. So I did. It was bladder infection. They put me on IV, pumped me with antibiotics and pain killers and anti-nausea meds. Fixed me right up, told me to take it easy. So I said great, I feel better, I'm going to work.
Many hours later, my supervisor drove me back to the ER. More fever, more shakes. The doctor hit me in the leg for going to work. Apparently, I have a KIDNEY infection! She doubled my anti-biotics and told me to go home and stay there for four days. She said I get the award for being tough though!! Wish I had my laptop. Could get a lot of homework done with all these days off.
Ok...back to my sick Mac:
Best Buy called to tell me it was fixed on Feb. 15 and I should come pick it up...in CHICAGO!! No, I said, it was supposed to be sent to Oregon. Ooops, they said, here it is in the notes! We'll send it right out to Oregon. Oh and BTW, the hard drive couldn't be saved. So sorry. That sound you hear is my heart breaking. My two oldest kids' prom and graduation photos...gone.
Next day, I get a call from the Service Center. We have your damaged hard drive here. Wondering if you wanted us to try and retreive data from it....say what?!? Seriously!!! Of course I do, so for $60 they will examine it and see how much it will cost to actually try to save it. Ka-ching!
Meanwhile, I'm without my laptop, trying to do classes online. My friend, Julie, is nice enough to loan me her laptop to get my work done and not flunk out of this class. I use my flash drive to put my work on and one day look at what is already on my flash drive. Apparently, when I transferred photos from my old desktop to my laptop, I left a bunch of them on my flash drive!! Prom!! Graduation!! The sound you hear is angel's singing!!!
I've called Chicago Best Buy and Springfield Best Buy every other day for the last week. Nothing. Can't even track it since there's no tracking number in their notes. I'm starting to think they are gonna buy me a new laptop.
Called Springfield today to see if my Mac is there yet. Nope. Not in yet. Mr. Geek said he would call Chicago and see what's up.
Apparently, there was a TRAIN DERAILMENT in Portland!! Don't worry. The Mac is fine. Should be in by MONDAY!! February 28th!! Oh, and BTW it will be over $500 to retrieve data from the busted hard drive . . . . . AAARRRGGGGHHHHH!!! That sound you hear is my wallet breaking.

Warrior Dash, Portland, Oregon
I took on one more project today.
I know, I know.
Please don’t tell me I’m crazy. I have enough people already doing that.
I know I’ve started many projects in my life that I have yet to finish:
I started building a dresser for my daughter, Tiffany, the summer I took a wood shop class at Lane Community College. It became kindling.
I attempted to build an outdoor garden “lighthouse” complete with a solar powered light for my grandparent’s anniversary. Again, kindling.
I was a carpentry apprentice for about six months.
I was an electrical apprentice for about the same amount of time.
I’ve been divorced twice and had more boyfriends than I care to discuss.
I have changed my college major from Accounting to Business to Computers to Business to Accounting to Marketing to Hospitality, over the course of 24 years.
I started a lucrative career selling lingerie (Undercover Wear) from my home. That lasted just a few months.
I started an even more lucrative career selling Pampered Chef from my home. That lasted for several months (only because I had lots of friends who really like Pampered Chef).
I started training to be a body builder when I turned 25. I was done two months later.
I was going to “be a runner”. Still not sure what I meant by that one.
One spring I decided to be a whitewater rafting guide. That was a fun class, and I guided a couple times afterwards, but that was it.
I have held nearly every job in the Weyerhaeuser sawmill in Cottage Grove because I would get bored of the one I held and sign every job posting.
I was going to be a poker pro and a golf pro and a professional artist and a motivational speaker.
I’ve started and abruptly ended an infinite number of diets and exercise programs.
Lately, however, I’ve had a string of finished projects:
Summer, 2010, I paid off my car loan. Still have the car, too.
November, 2010, I completed a two year apprenticeship to become a Journeyman Saw Filer.
March, 2011, I signed up for four weeks of Bootcamp. Not only did I complete them, I signed up for four more MONTHS!!
July, 2011, my third and final child moved out and into her own place. No, I’m not done being a mom, nor would I ever want to be, however I am now officially an “empty nester”.
August, 2011, I will earn my Associate’s Degree in... you guessed it… Hospitality!!!
So today I decided I would take on yet another project!
I’m going to get in excellent shape so I can run the Warrior Dash in September.
I thought about shooting for a half-marathon, or even a marathon, but the hard-core, down & dirty, 14-obstacles-over-a-bit-more-than-three-miles-dash, sounded like a MUCH bigger challenge!
Actually, it just sounded like a lot more FUN!!! I’m going to be running with some awesome folks from Bootcamp and I’m super excited to complete this task with them.
See for yourself what it’s all about: http://warriordash.com/register2011_oregon.php
I hope you will all come and cheer for my teammates and me on September 10th, in Portland, Oregon!!
I may be moved to Chicago by then, but if I have, I will return to Oregon on the 10th to do the Dash.

This one time, in London...
Travel Blog
Nov 19, 2010
I have returned from Europe. Alert the media.
Check.
Facebook has been informed.
Over the next few days I will try to remember some of the events and moments of my trip to London and Paris. I sorely wish I could have written while travelling, but when it comes to multitasking… well… those who know me realize I’m lucky to be able to singletask effectively. The word "singletask" is apparently not in my dictionary. Does that mean I just made up a word? Hey! I made up a word and blogged at the same time. Progress!
London was perfect! Gorgeous weather the first day with only a couple moments of light rain, so we managed to keep ourselves fairly warm and dry. I got to see everything I wanted, with the only exception being my relatives that live there. We tried to work it out but since they live about 70 miles outside of town, it just couldn’t be swung in the few days of my London visit.
Oh yes… I said 70 “miles”. They may drive on the wrong side of the road there, but they measure roads in miles as opposed to kilometers. Raise your hand if you knew that already. I didn’t.
Our hotel (Admiral Hotel) was in a busy area in London between Hyde Park and Paddington Station. You remember the children’s book about the little bear? This is the area where those stories started back in 1958. In the stories, the Brown family finds the bear at Paddington Station where he was left with a note asking someone to please take care of him. They name him Paddington, give him a birthday, and basically, adopt him. This book is very popular (and the bear as well considering how many shops were selling him!). I feel sad that I never read it to my kids. I didn’t realize what a great story it is. Now, however, I have a chance to share it with my grandson.
Doh! (forehead slap) What I should have done is bought a Paddington Bear book while I was there in London! Unfortunately, I’m NOT a good souvenir buyer. It’s that multitasking thing again. Shopping and sightseeing: Two great things that I can barely do separately, let alone at the same time.
I also cannot sleep and blog at the same time, so I’m giving up the one for now. Good night… eh… I mean CHEERS!!

A bit of "non-rev" luck
Travel Blog
Nov 10, 2010
Friends tell me I should blog about my travels. I’ve even had people tell me they live vicariously through the postings I put on my Facebook page. It’s nice to hear that because I enjoy sharing the fun things I get to do and the great adventures I have. However, I don’t want to bore anyone with the mundane details or daily itinerary.
Instead, I like to give people a good laugh or even inspire them to stretch their wings and discover a fun, new place for themselves. Just helping someone try a new restaurant or go ANYWHERE new excites me! If I could be a travel agent or tour guide, I think that would be sheer bliss. Actually, I would just like to hang with Samantha Brown.
So my first official “blog” will be a happy story:
I love to fly. Mostly, I love to fly First Class. I’ve flown Economy. I don’t recommend it. If you’ve never flown First Class, you don’t know what you’re missing. You may not want to continue reading. In First Class, besides having a bigger seat with more legroom, you get a pillow, a blanket, and food. Real food, on glass plates and real utensils, not plastic. You also get free cocktails. It’s super cozy!
I fly stand-by (aka "non-rev") because I fly courtesy of my boyfriend Steve, who works for an airline. This is a great benefit because it makes travel extremely affordable and highly stressful, but most importantly… affordable.
I work nights on the weekends. Two pm until 3 or 4 am. Three thirteens and I’m done, so it’s nice, in a way because I get four days off. It's hard when I travel. I work all night Sunday and get off at 4 am Monday morning. I then rush to the airport to catch the 6:30 am flight to Denver (DEN) or San Francisco (SFO) without getting any sleep all night.
On this particular Monday, November 8, 2010, I had a 6:30 am flight to Chicago. I was driven to the airport by my friend Melissa, and had plenty of time to get through security, get to the gate, and I even got my seat assignment fairly quickly. This is a big deal to those of us who fly standby. Just because you have a piece of paper in your hand saying you are booked on a flight doesn’t mean squat. Until you get the actual ticket in your hand with a seat number on it, you’re not going anywhere. So I was able to relax knowing I was going to be on the hour-long flight to SFO.
The flight was good. I ended up moving from my aisle seat to a window seat in the row in front of me, so that a woman could have her child sit by her. She had been told they would be together and then they weren’t. See? Travel is stressful even for those with guaranteed seats. So, once again, I will emphasize that my travel is affordable. Thank you, Steve!
I arrived safely in SFO. I used my eye mask and earplugs and was able to get about 20 minutes sleep. I would have got more but the kid behind kept kicking my seat. I gave up my seat for that kid. Tell me again why I did that? Because, it was the right thing to do (window seat…hee hee).
Anyway, I tucked my good deed away and headed to the gate for my connecting flight to Chicago (ORD). When flying standby and waiting for a seat, it’s almost like a game of roulette where you watch the big monitors to see where you are on the standby list. I routinely land in the middle of the list. If there are 10, I’m 5 or 6. If there are 50, I’m 25th. That’s normal. Rarely I’m first or second or third. Today? I’m last. Out of 7, so I’m thinking “ok…I can handle that”. Then I see there are only 5 seats left. Not so good. I remember my lucky bhudda.
I have a beautiful piece of jade with a bhudda carved in it that I wear for luck when I fly. It’s not because of a fear of flying, but because of my fear of not getting a seat.
I rub my bhudda then sit near the gate counter so I can hear my name if they call me for a seat. As I watch the monitor I realize there is a list of 71 people who requested to upgrade to First Class. I don’t blame them. Unfortunately, there are only 12 seats and they are already full. Damn.
As I continue to watch the monitor I see there are now 4 seats left and I’m still 7th of 7. Huh? Who did they give the seat to? Oh well, one of the mysteries of travel. Then there are 3 seats. I’m still 7th. Suddenly I’m 5th. Then I’m 3rd of 3 with no seats left. Economy is booked full. Double Damn.
I text Steve. I guess I will just get breakfast while I wait for the next flight. Steve told me a long time ago: don’t leave the gate area until the jet way door is closed and they tell you there are no more seats.
Meanwhile, the gate agents have been calling names of ticketed passengers who have not arrived at the gate yet. Ah ha! Maybe I will get one of their seats at the last minute. It has happened before.
Now the agents are saying “final boarding” and still calling three names. There are three of us in the waiting area who are rooting for those three people to not show up!
Finally, the gate agent calls our three names. Mine last of course. He tells us to go down the jet way and wait there to see if we get the last three seats. Meanwhile, I’m rubbing the bhudda. Rub rub rub.
They try to take our roller bags to check them, while we are waiting. I’m not giving mine up until I know I’m on this plane. The gate agent comes out and says we all have seats so I gave up my bag.
The two men ahead of me are immediately given their seat numbers and they enter the plane to sit down back in Economy. I’m still waiting for my seat assignment. I’m beginning to really worry now that I gave up my bag. Rub rub rub.
The flight attendant steps out of the plane onto the jetway and says “One seat left…5D”.
Gate agent says “We can’t put her there.”
Flight attendant: “We need a body in the seat.”
Gate agent, to me “Five David. Go!”
WHOO HOO….FIRST CLASS!!!
